We live in a fast-paced world where distractions abound and opportunities to overcommit are endless. Under the pressure to keep up and balance more, it can be easy to lose or never fully know yourself. Try setting aside some time to turn the lens inward and check on whether you’re living in accordance with your values, goals, strengths, and weaknesses. You may be surprised by what you find.

Here we have put together resources to inspire authentic living.

  • The sum of many parts. James Baldwin wrote: “I am what time, circumstances, history, have made of me, certainly, but I am also much more than that. So are we all.” In the article “Do You Know Your True Face”, Lama Rod Owen encourages readers to practice radical presence by increasing awareness of the many identities that make up a whole person.
  • Ditch the filter. In “How to Become Your Most Authentic Self”, Soul Cycle founder and fitness guru Stacey Griffith shares how her experience of getting real with herself – flaws and all – transformed her life and brought greater success.
  • Know thy storyteller. In the current era of “fake news” it has become harder to discern fact from fiction. In her piece “The Essential Role of Storytelling in the Search for Truth” Professor Lise Saffran makes the case for journalists to infuse their stories with personal connection, arguing that the most compelling information is found at the intersection of authenticity and credibility.

Following your inner compass. Kira M. Newman from the Greater Good Science Center discusses recent research linking mindfulness practice with authentic living, in her article “Can Mindfulness Help You Be More Authentic.” Turns out that the more we’re in tune with our thoughts, the more likely we are to act in alignment with our values and beliefs.

The Compassion in Action Fellows program is a year-long inner & outer change program that supports next-generation leaders in learning meditation practice, building community, and promoting social change. 💟

Inspired by the path of the bodhisattva, awakened beings filled with compassion and committed to ending suffering and benefiting all life. Fellows embark upon a journey that includes personal development, community building, shared learning, and collaborative action as they transform their lives, campus, and society. 🌍

Next-generation leaders ages 18-27 in the United States and Canada who have a meditation practice and commitment to creating inner and outer change are encouraged to apply! If you know an aspiring leader interested in positively impacting the world, consider nominating them for this opportunity.
